About Me
Just a little story about my nail journey (´⌣`ʃƪ)
Hi! I'm Kimsa, a millennial hailing from Melbourne, Australia.
I am the sole owner of this whole shindig, so I hope you can be kind if I may be a little slow or make a few little mistakes here and there hehe.
There are two main reasons why I started and love doing nails:
- My love of art
- To help my skin
My love of art
I've always been an artist at heart, but never thought I could make a career out of it. I went through many different career paths - from graphic designer to personal trainer and nutrition coach, hospitality front of house and retail worker - but nothing really felt right.
I still dabbled in art on the side. Digital art seemed fun, but I was always drawn to traditional, tangible art. I was occassionally drawing on regular paper and painting on glass, phone cases and shoes.
Although enjoyable, these didn't seem like ways I wanted to get my art out there - until I started getting my nails done. It seemed like such a fascinating concept, and the more I got my nails done, the more I watched and learned how the nail techs did my nails.
It wasn't until COVID hit that I had no choice but to try and do my nails by myself. I got hooked, and decided to do a course to become a nail tech.
I was providing in person nails for a while, but had decided to transition into press on nails. I wanted to expand my horizons on nail art and if I tried to do so during in person appointments then myself and my client would be corpses in our chairs.
Now with the gift of ✧ time ✧, I can make beautiful (or weird) nails for myself and others, because everyone deserves to elevate their look if they want to or just express themselves!
My skin healing journey
The real kicker is how doing nails helped heal my skin.
I've suffered with eczema all my life, but it wasn't until after I graduated highschool that I developed a skin condition called purigo nodularis. Think of it like long term chicken pox, but not contagious. I suffered with this condition for a little over 10 years, and it heavily affected all aspects of my life. I was in and out of the hospital for constant dermatology appointments, and I truly thought I would have to be on some form of medication for the rest of my life to simply keep my condition somewhat under control.
My doctors always told me to keep my natural nails as short as possible, to minimise how much damage I was causing my skin due to the itching. I never thought I'd be able to get my nails done, but one day a friend of mine insisted I go with her and I gave it a shot.
With what felt like a miracle, my skin started to heal. The itching subsided. What the heck was going on? My nails were longer, yet I was getting better.
It turns, out, due to the thickness (and bluntness) that nail enhancements create, my nails were not doing nearly as much damage to my skin as when I had short, natural nails. I also didn't want to use my nails as tools, which also helped prevent how much I was scratching my skin.
Although I still have many scars that may never fade, my skin has essentially completely healed (aside from the odd eczema flare up here and there).
I hope that, if anyone reads my story, that it can bring hope to those who may be suffering skin conditions too. Try on a set of nails, because who knows how it can help!
